Road Course Guides > Nelson Ledges
Disclaimer: The "track tips" below were gathered at a few Porsche and BMW schools I attended at Nelson Ledges Road Course. The one thing you'll notice after attending a few driving schools is that there are a number of fast lines around a road course, and you'll often get differing opinions on which is the fastest. You need to figure out whats the fastest for your driving style and car. That will only come with seat time.
A Lap of Nelson Ledges Road Course
Car: 1998 Acura Integra Type R (stock)
Tires: Kumho V700
Pressures: About 38 front, 36 rear (cold)
Turn 1 and 2:
A pretty fast sweeper. I stayed in 4th for this section of the course
(all the way thru turn 9) but the other two Type R's were grabbing 3rd here.
Turn in late into 1, then just let it carry you all the way out to track out at
the edge of the track at turn 2. There is some extra pavememnt on the outside of
the track - use it!
Turn 3:
Deceptively fast corner with tires lining the apex. I just barely
tap the brake to settle the car. I did take it flat out a few times and the R seemed
to handle it well.
Turn 4 and 5:
I'm carrying pretty good speed into turn 4 and need to get on
the brakes a bit hard to set up 5 correctly. Once slowed, I gently breathe back on
the throttle through 5 onto the little short
straight approaching turn 6.
Turn 6:
I was still in 4th gear through this section, but if behind slower traffic, I would
be in 3rd. 4th gear is just at VTEC entering turn 6 and I could hear it come
on nicely as I setup for 7.
Turn 7, 8, and 9:
The Carousel. This is a long decreasing radius turn that is surprisingly fast. I setup for 7 near the outside of the track and by the time I was
at turn 8 I was in the middle of the track trying to be right on the
inside just before 9, then hard on the power to track out at the very
edge of the track. Use ALL of the road here and get as far out as possible to
maximize speed onto the loooooooonnnnnng straight heading towards turn 10.
Turn 10:
Pretty much flat out in 4th.
Turn 11:
The Kink. This turn is sorta scary because I'm right at redline in 4th and
going well over 100. I tap the brake most of the time just before
the turn to settle the car, but took it a few times without braking,
and it worked well.
Turn 12:
Hard on the brakes in here, BUT make sure the car is straight. There
is a slight drop-off in the braking zone and I noticed a few cars
getting squirrely as they hit the brakes. Once slowed, drop it into
3rd and get on the gas hard for a second or so to setup for 13.
Turn 13:
Hard on the brakes again, then downshift to second. I thought this
was the trickiest turn on the course. I setup wide for it most of
the time, then apexed late and tracked out as far to the edge of the pavement as possible.
This seemed to set me up nicely for the start/finish straight. If you go
too fast into this turn, the front end will push you out too far
and you will scrub off alot of speed heading onto a fast straigtaway.
